TikTok, a short-form video social media application, originated from Byte Dance, has rapidly become a global phenomenon. With videos ranging from 15 to 60 seconds, TikTok fosters creativity, entertainment, and a user-friendly interface. The platform attracts a young audience, particularly those in the 16-24 age range, and has evolved into a creative advertising channel, leveraging music and hashtag challenges to cultivate a global community ignited by innovation.

As of now, TikTok has surpassed 4.1 billion downloads, making it the only app besides Facebook to achieve this milestone. This presents an opportunity for businesses to connect with a vast community. In this article, I will provide a detailed guide on creating a TikTok advertising campaign and share insights on how to accurately target your audience while monitoring the campaign's performance

Why should you run TikTok ads?

With an enormous user base worldwide, this represents a vast market for businesses. TikTok is predominantly used by Gen Z, but since the emergence of the pandemic, there has been an increasing adoption of the platform by older age groups. With diverse age groups now using TikTok, the potential to discover a substantial pool of potential customers for your business is significant.

However, the effectiveness of running ads on TikTok depends on various factors, and the most crucial one is identifying your target audience. It's essential to understand whether your target audience actively engages with this platform. Once determined, you can proceed to create advertisements specifically tailored to your audience, aiming to convert them into potential customers

What are TikTok ads?

TikTok ads refer to the advertising opportunities available on the TikTok social media platform. TikTok is a popular short-form video-sharing app where users can create and share videos set to music, showcasing their creativity and talents. The platform has become a significant space for social media marketing, and businesses can leverage TikTok ads to reach a wide audience

Some benefits of running ads on TikTok

Targeting Your Potential Customers Precisely:

When advertising, you can customize your target audience based on age, gender, interests, etc., aligning with your research on potential customers. Subsequently, you can further tailor and create lookalike audiences based on your current customer base.

Increasing Reach and Interaction for Your Videos and Business:

Advertising involves a paid approach, ensuring your content reaches the intended audience and expands the visibility of your videos and channel. Increased reach for compelling videos naturally leads to higher interaction, distributing your content to a broader audience.

Easy Tracking and Measurement for Optimal Advertising:

TikTok advertising campaign  provides measurement tools for tracking ad performance, facilitating the optimization of your video content. Notably, TikTok also features a Pixel similar to Facebook. Leveraging this Pixel allows you to monitor customer behavior and track users who have visited your channel, thereby generating a list of potential customers for your business.

TikTok's advertising manager provides a comprehensive set of tools to help you initiate ad creation, launch campaigns, and monitor their performance. Below are the key sections of the manager that you may need to be familiar with before commencing your TikTok advertising campaign.

Dashboard

On the dashboard, you will have an overview of your TikTok advertising data, as well as tracking for your entire campaign, including active campaigns, advertising budgets, advertising performance over time, and more.

Campaign

You can view your campaigns, ad groups, and individual ads here. This is also where you create your TikTok advertising campaign by clicking on the 'Create' button.

How many types of TikTok ads are there?

  1. In-feed ads

These are short video ads that appear in users' "For You" feed as they scroll through content. These ads typically last up to 15 seconds and can include links to websites or apps.

  1. Spark ads

Spark ads boost organic content from any user’s account. They seamlessly blend with your other TikTok and remain even after you no longer pay to promote them. They’re also open for duets or stitches

  1. Top View ads

These are full-screen ads that appear when users open the TikTok app. They offer a prominent placement and can be up to 60 seconds long. They’re displayed as the first thing users see upon app launch.

  1. Hashtag challenge ads

Companies can create branded challenges, encouraging users to participate and generate content around a specific hashtag. This can help increase engagement and brand visibility. You can sponsor a hashtag challenge lasting three to six days, encouraging users to create and share content around a themed challenge

  1. Sound on display ads

Brands can create and promote their own augmented reality (AR) effects or filters, allowing users to incorporate the brand's elements into their videos.

  1. TikTok Shop Ads

TikTok has been exploring e-commerce features, allowing businesses to showcase and sell products directly within the app. Ads related to the TikTok Shop can help promote these products.

TikTok Advertising Campaign Guide

Create TikTok Advertising Campaign

Begin by creating a Campaign, followed by setting up Ad Groups, and finally, constructing your ad content. Understanding the process is crucial for crafting a successful advertising campaign. More importantly, thorough research into customer behavior is necessary to establish advertising goals, allocate a reasonable budget, and create compelling content that resonates with your potential customers. Through this, you can develop a successful TikTok advertising campaign and optimize its performance.

  1. Set up a Campaign

After logging into your TikTok account, navigate to TikTok Ads Manager. To create an ad, click on 'Campaign,' and then press 'Create’

  1. Choose the Right Object

In this section, you need to determine your business objectives. This includes various goals such as increasing website traffic, driving conversions, or attracting viewers to your video content. After considering your objectives, you can choose one of the three main goals: awareness, consideration, or conversion.

  1. Set up a Campaign Name and Budget

You need to determine the budget for running ads, which is the amount you are willing to spend on advertising. Once this budget is depleted, the ads will automatically stop. You have three budget options to choose from:

  • No Limit: With this budget type, TikTok will have no restrictions on delivering your ads to users.

  • Daily Budget: This is a specific amount you allocate per day for running ads.

  • Lifetime Budget: This is the total amount you allocate for a specific period, such as for a campaign running over a set number of days.

  1. Set up an Ads Group

After creating a Campaign, the next step is to set up Ad Groups. Here, you can choose the ad placement, fill in ad details, set targeting, budget, bidding method, and delivery type.

Step 1: Placement

Choose your desired ad placement or select Automatic Placement to allow TikTok to optimize ad distribution across all placements.

Step 2: Ad Details

In the Ad Details section, you input all the information you want users to see or click on, including:

  • Display Name

  • Image

  • Category

  • Ads tag

  • User Comment

  • Video Download

Step 3: Targeting

Set up custom targeting based on factors such as demographics, age, gender, interests, etc.

Step 4: Budget

  • Set a budget, with a minimum requirement of $20, whether it's a daily or lifetime budget.

  • Scheduling: TikTok allows you to set the start and end time for your campaign. You can choose to run ads for specific hours or throughout the day.

Step 6: Bidding and Optimization

  • Optimization Goal: With certain campaign objectives, your optimization goal will be set by default. Otherwise, you’ll have the option of optimizing for conversions, clicks, or reach.

  • Bid Strategy: Standard Bid mode offers stricter control of your cost per result so the average cost per result stays within your bid.

  • Bidding: Set how much you’re willing to pay per click, conversion, or per thousand impressions and TikTok’s algorithm will deliver your ads accordingly.

  1. Create an Ads

After setting up your campaign and ad groups, the final steps to kickstart your advertising are as follows:

Step 1: Add Ad

Choose the ad format, including images or videos. You can create new content or use existing videos/images on your device, select and upload them.

Step 2: Select Cover Image

After uploading the video, click on 'Customize Video Thumbnail.' You can then choose a cover image of your preference.

Step 3: Enter Ad Name

This step is to help you differentiate between your various ads. It won't be visible on the video, and no one else can see it.

Step 4: Enter Ad Text

Input the text you want to appear with your video. TikTok supports 12–100 characters in English and 6–50 characters in Chinese or Japanese (including punctuation and spaces). Avoid using emoticons, French quotation marks, or hashtags at the beginning. Also, ensure the text is concise for full visibility on the ad.

Step 5: Add Call to Action

This is the final step before your ad goes live. Some call-to-action options you can consider include:
